Eight years, helpdesk to head of. I learned every layer on the way up, which is why I still know how the thing works when it breaks at 3am.

Cloud Strategy Platform Engineering AWS Architecture Infrastructure as Code Observability FinOps Security & Compliance Technical Leadership

Head of Systems

Jun 2026 - Present

  • I own the cloud platform function end to end. Architecture, spend, reliability and security for roughly 100 production servers and 250,000+ learners across regulated UK clients.
  • I set the technical strategy and the standards. What we build on, how we build it, and what "good" looks like. I write the guidelines, and I review the work that ships.
  • I own the cloud budget. Forecasting, savings plans, reserved instances, right-sizing. The bill is mine to explain and mine to bring down.
  • I'm the last line of escalation. The hardest technical problems, the third-party suppliers, and client onboarding and offboarding all land with me. So does the question of what we can and can't do with client data in the cloud.
  • Development, platform and support all take their technical lead from me. I've built and run the function on my own to this point, and taking it on with a team under me is the next move.

Senior Cloud Solutions Architect

Oct 2024 - Jun 2026 · 1 yr 9 mos

  • Designed and built the next-generation hosting platform. A multi-account AWS architecture, almost entirely in Terraform, where onboarding a client is a single config file. Built to scale horizontally across every tier; migrating the estate onto it is in progress.
  • Built the observability function on my own. Prometheus, Loki and Grafana with auto-discovery across four regions, alerting that finds the right person, and on-call wired in. I designed every dashboard.
  • Took the cloud bill personally. Pulled a five-figure monthly spend apart, found the real cost driver wasn't the obvious one, and brought it down without breaking anything.
  • Wrote the board briefing on moving data between the UK and New Zealand. The Privacy Act, GDPR, the US CLOUD Act, the lot. It informed a senior-leadership decision on a contract.
  • Built the company's self-hosted AI capability. A private, Bedrock-backed assistant and the automation around it, so the business got the upside without handing client data to a third party.
  • Shipped a secure medical-imaging proxy for an NHS trust. HMAC-scoped access tokens, the imaging server locked away on a private subnet, every request audited.
  • Solved race-safe autoscaling for the video platform. Scaling ordinary web servers is easy; doing it for stateful, live video sessions without dropping anyone's call is the hard part. The AWS orchestration around the open-source stack is mine.

Cloud Solutions Architect

May 2023 - Oct 2024 · 1 yr 6 mos · Remote

  • Led AWS hosting projects end to end. Scoped, designed and delivered client environments from first architecture through to production.
  • Replaced manual releases with a real pipeline. Automated build and deploy, which took both the time and the human error out of shipping.
  • Stood up the first proper monitoring across the estate. Grafana, Prometheus and Loki. This is the work that later grew into the full observability platform.
  • Set the standards and made the architectural calls for how managed hosting was built.

Linux System Administrator

Feb 2023 - May 2023 · 4 mos

  • Kept production LMS infrastructure healthy. Patching, upgrades and incident response across multiple client environments.
  • Provisioned and hardened Linux servers from a documented baseline.
  • Fixed the workflow and documentation gaps I found early. The fixes outlasted the role.

Linux AWS Terraform Moodle Totara Infrastructure at Scale Monitoring

Linux System Administrator

  • Helped keep thousands of servers and databases healthy worldwide. Moodle and Totara platforms serving hundreds of thousands of users, with very little tolerance for downtime.
  • Lived in a serious toolchain. AWS, Ubuntu Server, Terraform, Foreman, Grafana, Loki, Icinga and Nessus. This is where the observability habit started.
  • Standardised the upgrade process and its documentation for a team that was growing fast.

Security Infrastructure Design Cyber Essentials Plus Networking Risk Management Compliance

Security & Infrastructure Engineer

  • Took the MSP and its government-contract clients through Cyber Essentials Plus. The security-by-default habit started here.
  • Designed high-availability networking and storage for clients who needed it to genuinely stay up.
  • Overhauled the internal security policy and process. Better procedures, better documentation, higher standards.
  • Ran the audits and risk assessments and closed the gaps before they turned into incidents.

Hyper-V Active Directory Azure AD SQL Server Microsoft Stack IT Leadership Security Awareness

Senior IT & Applications Executive

Full-time · Jan 2021 - Mar 2022 · 1 yr 3 mos · Hove

  • Ran all IT for an 80+ person business, on my own. Infrastructure, applications and support, all of it mine.
  • Owned the IT budget and the suppliers. Purchasing, contract negotiation, cost control. The same instinct I now point at a much larger cloud bill.
  • Consolidated and modernised the server estate. Virtualisation across physical and Hyper-V, less sprawl and less cost.
  • Managed 100+ business applications as the person who understood the whole stack and owned the architecture calls.
  • Led the technical architecture for the website and event platform, working directly with the developers.
  • Deep on the Microsoft stack. Hyper-V, ADFS, Azure AD, Active Directory, SQL Server.

Helpdesk and Training Coordinator

Jun 2018 - Jan 2021 · 2 yrs 8 mos · Hove

  • Provided 1st through 3rd line support across the business. Hyper-V, SQL Server, Active Directory, networking, desktops.
  • Led the KnowBe4 security awareness rollout. Configured the platform, ran phishing simulations, delivered training company-wide.
  • Re-rolled LastPass across the organisation. Cleaned up the existing mess, set proper policies, trained everyone on actually using it.
  • Delivered technical training to non-technical staff. Made people less afraid of their own computers.

Qlik SQL ETL Data Analytics Process Automation Team Leadership

Insight & Analytics Manager

Sep 2017 - May 2018 · 9 mos

  • Led a team of six analysts, and stepped in to run other teams of six to ten when their managers were away. This was where I first carried other people's delivery as well as my own: the dashboards, reports and data pipelines feeding senior-leadership decisions.
  • Built automation for call grading and quality review. Replaced manual processes with automated workflows integrated with HR systems.
  • Designed data flows and ETL pipelines across the business. Made sure the right data reached the right people in the right format.
  • Heavy on Qlik and SQL. Dashboards, complex queries, data transformation at scale.
  • Delivered trend analysis to senior leadership. Linked complaint volumes to un-notified outages and drove operational changes as a result.
